Kenny Dalglish tells Liverpool FC fans - we'll give our all for you at Chelsea

by James Pearce, Liverpool EchoNov 29 2011

KENNY DALGLISH has promised Liverpool FC’s 5,500 travelling supporters his side will give everything to keep their Carling Cup dream alive at Stamford Bridge tonight.

The Liverpool FC boss has made no secret of his anger at the “irresponsible” scheduling of the quarter-final tie with Chelsea – just 48 hours after the 1-1 draw with Premier League leaders Manchester City.

But Dalglish, who was overwhelmed by the magnificent backing his LFC players received at Anfield on Sunday, says they are determined to upset the odds.

“Of course there’s been concern about the close proximity of both games but we have to get on with it,” Dalglish said.

“We don’t know who will play yet as we’ve got to assess them and see how everyone is.

“But we’ve sold out our allocation at Chelsea and whatever team we put out on that pitch, they will try as hard as they possibly can for those fans and try to progress in the competition.

“Everyone on our side of the fence wants to say thank-you to the fans for all the support they gave the players against City.

“They stayed with us throughout and you could see how much the players appreciated that. They showed that by the fact they put in so much effort and commitment.”

Dalglish believes Sunday’s impressive performance against City proves his new-look Reds side, who are unbeaten in 10 games in all competitions, are starting to realise their potential.

“We’re really encouraged by what we’ve seen and the players have responded really well,” he added. “The fans have been great as well with the understanding they have shown. It’s a relatively new team because of the five or six players we brought in during the summer. The fans understand that and can see the progress.

“We will keep working at it and trying to improve, and what’s clear is that the players and the supporters both need each other.

“When you’ve got the punters and the players working together as a unit like they were at Anfield on Sunday that’s really encouraging to see.”

The Reds won 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League just nine days ago courtesy of Glen Johnson’s late winner.

But Dalglish says that victory in West London has no relevance to tonight’s showdown.

“We got our reward for a good performance at Chelsea recently but that will count for nothing in this game,” he said.

“We will have to earn what we want to achieve.”

Craig Bellamy made the trip to the capital as part of a strong Liverpool squad for tonight’s game. The Welshman is set to return to action after missing the clash with City following the death of his international boss and former team-mate Gary Speed.
