Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard lead England to a 3 - 1 victory against Egypt at Wembley. A brace from former striker Peter Crouch contributed to the goals.

Gerrard was substituted in the second half but made a reasonable contribution and can still improve.

Argentine captain Javier Mascherano lead his side to a 1 - 0 away victory against Argentina. Not such good news for Sotirios Kyrgiakos (aka Nick the Greek) as his Greece side suffered a 2 - 0 home loss to Senegal.

Future Liverpool striker Milan Jovanovic played but did not score in Serbia's 3 - 0 away victory against Algeria. Good news for Yossi Benayoun (Romania 0 - Israel 2)and Dirk Kuyt (Netherlands 2 - 1 USA) as both scored from the penalty spot for their respective nations.

Fernando Torres came on as a second half substitute for Spain in their 2 - 0 away victory against France in Paris. Torres did not score. Pepe Reina was an unused substitute.
