Liverpool FC's Luis Suarez seeks apology from Man Utd defender Patrice Evra if racism charges are dropped

by James Pearce, Liverpool EchoNov 8 2011

LUIS SUAREZ wants an apology from Patrice Evra if he’s cleared of racially abusing the Manchester United defender.

The Liverpool striker has spoken out for the first time about the serious allegations made by Evra and is adamant the claims are untrue.

The Football Association launched an investigation following the 1-1 draw between the sides last month and met with Suarez at Melwood last week.

Both clubs are awaiting the FA’s findings but the Reds’ top scorer, who has the full backing of boss Kenny Dalglish, insists his conscience is clear.

Speaking to reporters following his arrival back home in Uruguay ahead of Friday’s World Cup qualifier against Chile, he said: “There are things that happen in football, things of the moment, which leave one feeling bad.

“Now it is necessary to hope that this topic is decided and then the Manchester player and I are going to have to clear things up.

"Depending on which way the judgement goes, one of us will have to apologise.

“The English federation is going to have to clarify it with him because there is no proof at all that I have said something racist to him.

"And I did not say it to him.

“There were two parts of the argument, one in Spanish and the other one in English.

"I did not insult him, it was just my way of expressing myself.

“I called him something that his own companions of Manchester say to him.

"Moreover, even they themselves were surprised by his reaction.”

More than three weeks have past since Evra made the damaging allegations and Liverpool are keen to see the FA bring their investigation to a swift conclusion.

Suarez and Reds defender Sebastian Coates face a hectic international break with Friday’s qualifier against Chile in Montevideo followed by a friendly against Italy in Rome next Tuesday night.

The former Ajax frontman, who flew with Coates to South America after Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Swansea City, says he’s been hampered by a calf problem in recent weeks.

However, he has vowed to be fit to line up for the depleted Copa America winners, who are without the injured Diego Forlan among others.

“Obviously after Saturday’s game and the trip I am a bit tired but I am recovering,” Suarez added.

“It is incredible the quantity of injuries that we have. I also was hurt in the calf during the games with Norwich and Stoke but thankfully it was not major. We’re happy to be top of the qualifying group but this is an important match against Chile because then we do not play until June.”

Pepe Reina has been named in the Spain squad for Saturday’s friendly against England at Wembley but there’s no place for clubmate Jose Enrique.

Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam has dropped out of the Scotland squad to face Cyprus in a friendly in Larnaca on Friday due to a knee injury.
