Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is hopeful that the Reds could still steal fourth place but is reluctant to get his hopes up, following the 4-0 victory over Burnley yesterday.
Gerrard was in impressive form, scoring two goals to help keep Liverpool's faint Champions League hopes alive.
The England midfielder told the Liverpool Echo, “We won’t give up but it would be stupid of me to say this or that is going to happen – it’s important to be realistic,
“We are underdogs for fourth position but our fans know that we have also got Everton breathing down our necks and we certainly don’t want them finishing above us.
“We have got a couple of games left now (against Chelsea and Hull) and the idea is to take maximum points to see if we can get into fourth through the back door.
“If we take maximum points, who knows? The teams above us might slip up. All we have done (by beating Burnley) is keep the pressure on those above us.”
Looking ahead to Liverpool's Europa League semi-final second leg at Anfield this week, Gerrard hopes that yesterday's win will set the scene perfectly for a European night to remember.
He continued, “We are going to pile everything into the game and Thursday can’t come quickly enough.
“It was important that we scored a few goals and hopefully everyone is really positive.”
